Activities:

(1) Activities in NEC period and France
@Upon his graduation from the University of Tokyo in 1954, he joined NEC Corporation. He was engaged in development of super-multichannel microwave telecommunication systems. A novel solid-state FM modulator for 1800 channel use, AFC (Automatic Frequency Control), and others@were developed by him. He worked as system manager for developing a microwave telecommunication system for Japanese National Railway, etc.@In 1960, he began a research on radio-spectroscopy at the University of Grenoble as French government scholarship student and obtained an Ingénieur-Docteur degree in 1962. After rejoining NEC, he resumed a microwave telecommunication development and started an opto-electronics research.  Almost all opto-electronics business in NEC were inaugurated by him. He was appointed as board member and associate senior vice president in 1984. He left NEC in 1988 for Tokai University.

(2) Opto-Electronics Research:
Prof. Uchida is the first presenter of the basic idea of Micro-Optic Devices, which are widely employed in modern optical communication systems. Stimulated by those rapid developments, an international conference, named MOC (Micro-Optics Conference), has been being held every two years since 1987. He further proposed a novel concept of Optical Surface Mount Technology (O-SMT), which is an advanced concept of Micro-Optics.
@Its basic patents have been established in U.S.A, Europe, and Japan. As to this O-SMT, he currently makes a multi-client and non-exclusive joint research with a number of companies. He is also working for absolute frequency stabilization of visible laser diodes and for characterization of planar micro-lens matrix@which will be adopted in future projection TV and optical interconnection in computers. He has made a variety of academic activities as responsible person for a number of academic societies.

(3) Survey of Electronics Industry (English and late Japanese versions) and its Consultation:
He is currently making an investigation research regarding the technology and market trends in the electronics industry on the basis of his broad business experience in plants, laboratories, and subsidiary companies. He has also been making its lectures on request of companies and overseas universities frequently. @

(4) Consultation on Research & Development Management:
He has been giving many lectures on R & D management on the basis of his business experience and working as coordinator for the R & D management committee of the Business Research Institute in Japan, where executive managers responsible for corporate R & D in large companies get together every month for discussing how to improve R & D management.
@In this respect, he has often worked as international consultant for the World Bank projects regarding national science and technology R/D policies in China and Malaysia, as well as for the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. He is versed in French and English.

(5) Activity as Science and Technology Columnist:
He has been writing science and technology articles including market and technology trends as regular columnist for the Nikkei Sangyo (Industrial) Newspaper since 1990.

(6) Publications and patents
About two hundred p uding telecommunication, opto-electronics, and management has been published.
@Besides,@about  fifty patents of microwave and opto-electronics fields@have been invented by him.

(7) Award:
1) Achievement Award of IEICE (
Institute of Electronics, Information and
Communication Engineers) in May 1974 for SELFOC fibers R/D.
2) First Micro-Optics Award (Second Micro-Optics Conference : July 1989)
for the proposal of Micro-Optics Concept.
3) Distinguished Service Award (the highest Award of IEICE) in May 2000 for his excellent contribution
to Opto-Electronics Researches including SELFOC, Micro-Optics, and Optical Surface Mount Technology,
as well as to the the Start-up and Operation of the Continued Education Courses of IEICE over the past 19 years.
4) Contribution Award of OITDA(Opto-electronic Industry and Technology Development Association) in December 2000.
5) Emeritus fellow of IEICE (in May 2001) for his excellent contribution to the Institute over the past long years.

 (8) Membership:
Members of IEICE, Physical Society of Japan, Japan Society of Applied Physics,
and Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan,
Fellow member of IEEE and OSA (Optical Society of America),
Member of Société Franco-Japonaise des Technique et Industrielle,
Member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, etc.
